"Peace Without Reproach by Leonard J. Nadeau" Watching the long-married, the long-in-love we see the peaceful playfulness, the small jokes which illuminate the infinite web of bonds which hold two together. So with the poems in Peace Without Reproach. The poems are grown around love and caring, so the playful rhymes never mask the deepest purpose. They are expressive notes which sing “I care, I’m here, you’re here, this is our world.” Yet the world the poet explores is greater than a single human couple. His celebrations, his warmth and his concern are for our world, for all of us. The celebrations are of the sometimes joyously eccentric bonds which link friend and friend, of the connections of tree and land and sea, and of the shifts of time which root the inevitability of age. The concern is a warning: find the center, look for the core, the reason traditions exist. The perversion of religion, for instance, as something exclusionary, rather than all-embracing, is a... More > destructive illusion which corrodes truth and foments hate, rather than love. And it is the warmth of that love which glows through these poems. We need the reminder, as we see the results of hate every day. Here’s a chance for an alternative. It is difficult to ignore the intensity of the poems in this collection, just as it’s difficult to ignore the intensity in the playfulness of a lover. The play in these, of sound, of meaning, of rhyme and image seems at first glance light, easy, simple. The images will hover within your mind, however, resurfacing when you least expect them. Not far beneath lie the kinds of truths which we all must face, particularly in today’s world. Try “Peonies” for instance, or “Singing Roses.” These are poems to read and think through, but more importantly, they are poems to share with others. You will find sharing hard to resist.
