Many people throughout the developing world rely on a hand pump for their water supply. But, like any other mechanical device, hand pumps wear out and break. The causes and the frequency of malfunction are affected by many variables. Keeping the pumps working – “hand pump sustainability” - is a critical problem with many facets. This manual has been written to address one of those facets, the shortage of trained pump repair technicians. It introduces repair technicians to the technical skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are considered necessary for a successful pump repair program.

A practical guide to learning the basics of hand pump repair. This manual leads the user through a hands on approach to learning how the different categories of hand pumps work, how to repair them and when replacement is the only viable solution for clean water. the manual also contains useful and insightful information about the basic charactoristics of hand dug wells, their draw backs and how to recognize when it's time to abandon a failed well and replace it with a hand pump. The illustrations are well done and the examples and exercises are geared toward a variety of learning styles. I highly recommend this manual for someone interested in hand pump repair, especially in countries of differing cultures.

Effective hand pump repair is more than just knowing where to put the wrench to the bolt. This manual does that and more. The text covers the basics of proper well construction, rehabilitation and sanitation. It addresses the proper use of tools, cutting and threading steel pipe, working with PVC and retrieving objects dropped down the well. The Manual also deals with the roles and attitudes of the repair team and their relationships with the villagers where the wells are located. It discusses the need for, and suggestions about, local responsibility to insure the sustainability of the well and sanitary water. I took the Hand Pump Repair class in October, 2010 and found the Manual to be well written with excellent teaching approaches, diagrams and exercises. I highly recommend the Manual and Class to anyone thinking of performing hand pump repair in a developing country. Larry Beckett
