It is difficult to express, in words, all the hands-on operations that take place in the process of repairing a hand pump that is not delivering water. Troubleshooting, safety concerns, repair options, and teamwork all need to be learned by a new technician. This book is written as a teaching resource that can do all those things along with the guidancem an experienced technician. There is no substitute for getting your hands on a pump with the assistance of a professional. With an experienced teacher and this manual, the seeming difficulties of hand pump repair can be easily overcome.
A practical guide to learning the basics of hand pump repair. This manual leads the user through a hands on approach to learning how the different categories of hand pumps work, how to repair them and when replacement is the only viable solution for clean water. the manual also contains useful and insightful information about the basic charactoristics of hand dug wells, their draw backs and how to recognize when it's time to abandon a failed well and replace it with a hand pump. The illustrations are well done and the examples and exercises are geared toward a variety of learning styles. I highly recommend this manual for someone interested in hand pump repair, especially in countries of differing cultures.
Effective hand pump repair is more than just knowing where to put the wrench to the bolt. This manual does that and more. The text covers the basics of proper well construction, rehabilitation and sanitation. It addresses the proper use of tools, cutting and threading steel pipe, working with PVC and retrieving objects dropped down the well. The Manual also deals with the roles and attitudes of the repair team and their relationships with the villagers where the wells are located. It discusses the need for, and suggestions about, local responsibility to insure the sustainability of the well and sanitary water. I took the Hand Pump Repair class in October, 2010 and found the Manual to be well written with excellent teaching approaches, diagrams and exercises.
