The download at £7.20 (inc VAT) is reasonable value especially if your interest is more in the social side of community broadband. Don't expect to see photos of routers, ONTs or what's inside a "Digital Village Pump" nor will you find details that allow you to get a grip on what such a project entails, costs and delivers. It's fine as an inspirational text with a healthy (?) dose of the usual Annison campaign platform. This isn't a How To or a Business Case for a community network but there is a need for one sometime soon.

This is a mega book, describing how the fastest village in digitalbritain came about. It is a must read for all councilors wondering whether to give the public money in their care to the incumbent or to innovators. After reading this book I hope many will realise that the incumbent is determined to protect the copper phone lines, and the innovators are determined to provide real Next Generation Access for as many rural people as possible. The innovators and the smart villages will JfDI, as they have in Ashby, without any government money. If the innovators actually had funding the job would be done much faster, and more rural areas would be covered, and if the telcos don't watch out their customers in urban areas would join the new networks. If we can only get true internet to the rural people through fibre then market forces will bring it to the cities, and before we know it Britain will be leading the digital revolution, not being left behind in the slow lane of copper. Well done to... More > Ashby, well done to the main innovators, NextGenUs, AFL and CTTS. And a big well done to Lindsey, John and Mark, for a superb book and great photos. chris< Less
