For many years the Pathfinder Parachute group Europe has jumped at the Dutch National Parachute center at Teuge in Holland. In the corner of the airfield stands a memorial raised by the locals to a Lancaster bomber that was shot down by a German Night Fighter. On each course of Novice parachutists we make a point of taking them to the memorial and showing them the citation. The one mystery we had was how did the rear gunner survive.Normally the rear gunner died in a bad crash as the tail had a habit of sheering off.We had heard that for a number o f years the rear gunner had been coming back to visit the memorial but that he had not been seen in recent years. It was not until one of our jumpers unearthed this book written by Linton that we finally heard the full story. This man had a miraculous escape and this tells it in his own words. Its a very well written account by a modest man who has now been laid to rest with his comrades in Holland. Its the sort of story that should be read to... More > your your kids so they can appreciate the sacrifices men like Linto were prepared to make to give them the freedom they have today.Lest we forget.< Less
