This is a review of the intro rather than the book if it's allowed; The idea that if Napoleon was American he would be Confederate "one of us" is in accurate in many ways. He was not honorable. He deserted his armies on several occasions in favor of returning to Paris to keep his political power and goals. He had secret police, used the military to seize power in a junta, he executed opponents and ordered war crime mass murders in Egypt. He attempted to bring back slavery in Haiti. Most humans do not praise such things - thus, he is not 'one of us'. He was more inclined to be a federalist - being an Empire builder he did what Lincoln did; absorbed neighbours by force. I could never imagine Jefferson or Lee putting their brothers as Governors of conquered northern States. He would be more inclined to keep and expand the Union if he could make himself President of the USA for life - he would have conquered the South in 3 months probably too. He was not so much proud as a... More > megalomaniac narcissist of the highest degree possible. He never admitted to mistakes unless in a tragic-hero kind of way. His philosophy and writing is definitely well worth reading. Having said that, one should be aware that his version of where he made mistakes in history is often a twisted self-forgiving version of the actual events.< Less
