“The Lost Chapters” is an absorbing read that provides fascinating insights into a wide range of topics including Jazz, post-WWII Europe, advertising, growing up in New York City, and alcoholism. One of the included photos shows a trio “posed for fun in a studio,” and encapsulates a lot of what is compelling about the book: The author’s parents are so elegant and self-assured, so 1950’s! All are looking in different directions, their expressions enigmatic. What are they thinking? Who is the unnamed third person? Had the “troubles” begun? Will their daughter ever discover what was really going on? This book shows how even where there is love and joie de vivre and talent and money, life can be very difficult. A mystery wrapped in a journey of self-discovery, it is a treasure.

Fans of Mad Men should read The Lost Chapters, the true story of a Madison Avenue advertising man who experienced the glamor and success of the industry's heyday while ultimately being destroyed by it. The cable show Mad Men keeps viewers watching by dangling the hope of a new big client (and its money) to wash away the mistakes, failures and hubris of the show's characters. In The Lost Chapters, Dick Anderson receives no such reprieve, but much can be learned from his tragic experience.
