Gratiot County Gets Its Start

This is an adaptation for children of chapters 1-3 in the book Taming the Wilderness by Dave McMacken. Along with the text there are photographs, primary sources, maps (illustrated by the author), and fact boxes to help tell the story of how one mid-Michigan county began. World events are woven in with local stories to give younger readers an idea of what Gratiot County, Michigan was like before settlers began to transform the wild woods and swamps.
