  "Rough Side Of The Mountain" I knew for a long time that this book was being pinned, and I was so excited when I received it. Within first a few pages, with the description of the Lucas' family beginning on the American continent as slaves, I became a slave of each next page. Like a magic box, the book provides real pictures of inhuman slavery conditions in USA, without bitterness towards Caucasians and with a strong message, that no matter the environment in which one man finds himself in, only strong will, faith and clear, absolutely clear aim in life can conquer and prove once again, that human mind is like water. No one can stop it. It is a short book, with a lifetime long message. '' Rough Side of the Mountain'', is the book, which leads those who can hear it. Dr. A Fucic, Republic of Croatia, June 2008

  "Rough Side of The Mountain" I had the opportunity to read this book, it traces the roots of the Lucas clan from slavery to the present. A marvelous story rooted in the American dream and a recommended read for anyone who has ever been curious about their lineage.

  "Rough side of the mountain: review by Dr. Hong He People’s Republic of China" I opened the book with a lot of questions, how did an Africa American family rise up from slavery? Could it just be because this family was very lucky and got their freedom and education from others as “gift”? I like true stories and I thought I have been in United States many years (my country of origin is China) and now I am citizen, it is the time for me to learn more about true African American history. Following the author, I went though this family history from 1776 to the present, I am surprised, I saw the first Lucas struggled and purchased freedom for himself; I can feel how painful it was to be forced as slaves for generations, taken from a beautiful African village to America. I am an immigrant, I know how difficult it is to move to a new world, and can not imagine to be forced to do so and be a slave in a new world! The young James (first Lucas) must have had strong feeling for... More > freedom, in order to work and save money for so many years! James and his son, John, were very strong and have good plan, they finally bought a huge piece of land! That story did change the slave’s pictures in my mind. It touched my heart; I admire their bravery and ability to change their life by themselves. In this world, there are no “gifts” for you in your life, you have to struggle for your goal, never give up. That great aphorism still works in the current world. I just have one life, read the Lucas history, it’s like I had the chance to live in a different age, helped me gain courage to survive in the present one. I appreciate that the author shared their family value with all of us. It was very impressive that landownership played an important role in Lucas family history and really changed their life. I told myself that to own property and have inheritance was such a natural and smart choice. People have had a system and environment that supported and condoned that in a natural and straightforward way in United States for over two hundreds years, that must be where the meaning of the phrase “American dream” came from, in this case, Lucas family story is an illustrated case in point for it. By reading this book, I can better appreciate the importance of owning land and passing on one’s legacy to future generations, enabling them to stand taller and see further than their forbears, because they truly have stood on the shoulders of giants.
