“IF someone says to you: 'the forest is nothing,' I will come and say: 'come and live with me, with nothing. No money. Come and live with me in the forest for a few months – you will survive. And I will go with you to the cities with nothing – no money - how do you survive?'” - Nelson Kelesau --- FOR SIX weeks in mid-2010 I lived in a village named Long Lamai with a tribe in Borneo known as the Penan, a once fully-nomadic, now mostly settled community. Whilst volunteering to teach English in the village I also got to work on my own project to collect stories from the villagers and to publish it in a book and sell it for the benefit of the community. HERE then is that book, containing thirty stories from twenty-one people; stories to entertain all ages with tales from Penan music, myth and legend to more serious ones about struggles in poverty, education and the need for the jungle to survive.

Many of the Penan want to share their stories with others, in particular their knowledge of the jungle. Read their stories aloud: to children or to parents; talk about them and of course please review the book. This is the FULL-COLOUR PRINTED paperback A5 version of the book. Unfortunately, due to the full-colour option this version is priced at £35. Because of this I have also created a BLACK & WHITE PRINTED paperback US Trade version which you can find at this link: That version is priced at £10. There is also an EBOOK version available here: There are a large amount of full-colour photographs and drawings inside the book as well as coloured text so this is what I advise: if you can afford it, buy the full-colour version. If not, buy the black and white version or... More > download the book if that is preferable. All profits go direct to the village for such things as: purchasing building materials for houses, boats and community projects; allowing children to enter the next level of education and supporting western healthcare.< Less
