In this Civil War era dime novel written by a veteran of the conflict, Union forces have just retaken Springfield, Missouri, in November 1861 when their commander is removed and they are ordered to retreat. After a Union soldier vanishes under suspicious circumstances, his best friend and his sister undertake a dangerous quest to determine whether he is dead or alive, and who was responsible for his disappearance.
