This is a coming-of-age novel about a young woman who has no sense of belonging in the world or of a safe haven. This story will touch the hearts of all who have felt out of place or struggled to fit in, make do and find their way.
an exerpt:
Brenda continued her drawing. She moved her hand gracefully across the page. "We'll live." she said. "We'll have fun anyway."
John looked at Susan, at her bare feet and unshaven calves, her ragged clothes and pain filled eyes. 'I shouldn't have asked her to come here.' he thought, 'We've gone in different directions; we've seen different things.'
He stared at her and saw her crouched on a rock at the lakeside... following the swooping and circling of the barn swallows... She looked up and he saw the swallows swooping in the dark blue of her eyes. She was the green and purple of an island dusk; calm and self-contained, but fragile, like the painting she had sent to him.
