The New Haven Yacht Club was established in a Chapel Street bank building at the Northwest corner of State Street in 1881, making it one of the oldest chartered yacht clubs in the country. The first clubhouse was originally located at the end of a 1,100 foot pier off Water Street (near the foot of Franklin Street) in New Haven. At the turn of the century the building was moved a short distance eastward to the rear of the Sargent Company pier. During its heyday the NHYC was host to many nationally renowned yachting squadrons including the New York Yacht Club during its annual tri-cornered regatta on Long Island Sound. The club moved to Morris Cove in 1903, where it occupied several locations until 1943, when, some say because of damage from the 1938 hurricane and the intervening war years, along with the passing of its generous founders, it closed. The revival of the present Club developed one Sunday afternoon in February 1967 in Morris Cove, where it has continued to operate until the present day.
