This book is well worth reading if you work in the NHS, and particularly if you have had the misfortune to fall foul of the culture of "investigate and discipline" for the slightest breach or suspected breach of NHS policies. The book is clearly written and very readable. I can confirm that Lucy's description of how it operated in the case of James is not unique. I have personal knowledge of a similarly unjust, career-threatening and abusive disciplinary process, in which evidence was ignored and policies and procedures similarly twisted, with devastating short term impact on mental health which may yet prove to be long term damage. There was an assumption of guilt and no understanding that the accused might be the subject of bullying behaviour. There is a culture within at least parts of the NHS which must have a scapegoat, even when no harm has been done. This book does an effective job of highlighting a clear example of management bullying.

This true story is a good case study of all that is wrong in the NHS. Managers and colleagues that should have been supportive and caring showed no interest in their colleagues personal distress and made assumptions without the facts. A few seemingly minor errors were blown out of proportion without looking for any other explanation and were ultimately used as reason to sack them. The absolute determination of the senior manager to pursue this path comes across like a dog with a bone. Team members should be ashamed of themselves for not providing more support to the individual when they were unwell - leaving them feeling isolated and alone. HR should be ashamed for the totally awful process that they put James through. All of this and no patient was harmed. NHS managers have a lot to learn.
