This book should come with a warning label: DO NOT BEGIN READING THIS WHEN YOU GO TO BED OR YOU'LL BE UP HALF THE NIGHT We begin quietly, as it is January, mostly with tweets about folks who see Susan out and about, but it gives you a clear idea of how difficult it can be for her to go anywhere unobserved. Gradually, news about the musical begins to appear, and the suspense begins to build. Can they really make a successful musical about her life?! (Look what happened to the Coronation Street Musical - such high hopes, but it folded after only one week.) I defy any Susan Boyle fan to reach the part where the reviews are pouring in and not get misty eyed! It is indeed a huge success! For those fortunate enough to have seen the play, this retelling will be a sweet reminder. For those of us who haven't, it provides a clear and detailed description of the play. With her permission, USA fan Counic's excellent scene by scene report is included, supplemented by many other details from fans... More > who were there. While LucyB mostly lets the story tell itself, once in awhile her voice is heard, as when she references this review by Dominic Cavendish of The Telegram/UK: "This is a delight that deserves to go far, and fast, as she has done." LucyB then gently reminds us of what Mr. Cavendish said in 2009, referring to Susan: "Acquiring star status is another matter. To do that society's attitudes and prejudices about age and appearance would have to be transformed. And miracles on that scale don't happen." But for Susan Boyle - they do! There are many great quotes from reviews included, but let me share just one more - from Ann Gilchrist: "She walked out on stage, held out her arms, and stood there. She has a huge stage presence that I cannot explain. She absolutely held that audience in the palm of her hand." The book is over 500 pages and contains so much more, such as the announcement that Susan will sing for the Queen - and then the performance, along with her return appearance on Britian's Got Talent as a special guest. As always, a great resource with indexes, timelines, etc - but thanks to the incredible work of editing by LucyB, also a very moving, deeply touching story of a unique Star. NOTE: After the six month period detailed in this book ended, Elaine C Smith announced that the movie rights for Susan's story have been purchased by Fox Searchlight (The Full Monty, Slumdog Millionaire).< Less
