This book is being developed in the context of training programs in silicon photonics, specifically in the NSERC Si-EPIC Program (Canada) and the OpSIS Workshops (United States).
Silicon photonics is a technology enabling large-scale integration of photonic components into photonic circuits. This book provides a practical, examples-driven introduction to the practice of designing practical silicon photonic devices and systems. Numerical methods such as finite difference time domain (FDTD) and eigen-mode solvers coupled with solutions to optoelectronic equations are the workhorses in silicon photonic component-level design. The physical design methodology takes advantage of commercial electronic-design automation (EDA) tools for circuit design and layout. The circuit-modeling tool utilizes physical-level opto-electronic simulations, and/or experimental data, to build compact models for the optical elements.
The present edition focuses on the design of silicon photonic devices.
