Just Say Cheese
eBook (PDF), 200 Pages
The ultra-camp gay owners of a struggling restaurant in a not-yet-trendy part of Washington DC are preoccupied by a Transvestite Triathlon and by affairs of the heart, while the city burns beneath them. Corruption, sexploitation, and vagrancy are rife. Uptown friends and foes alike struggle with histrionics, arrests and sordid encounters. Over at the peeling, wheezing City Hall, brains and actions move more slowly and subversively. Meanwhile down among the explosions, thefts and safety inspections on U Street, the creative restaurateurs and mud-wrestlers endeavor to stave off the chaos intruding on their dominant drumbeat of wild revelry, banter and ardor. Their creativity is awesome, their desserts are (w)holesome. All this spells danger for the evangelist, conservative media and establishment figures in the story. Like-minded readers beware; everyone else, enjoy your tapas! "A stylish, hilarious romp. Bring your foie gras, fedora and figleaf to the party."

Oct 15, 2009"Perfect entertainment ..." Wow! Perfect entertainment for the beach, where I read it, chuckling with glee. Before you finish the first page you’ll become part of Luke Hudson Fox’s crazy set of friends and foes. No matter your sexual or political persuasion, you will see yourself and your buddies sometime painfully reflected (a hallmark of the “reality fiction” genre?) in the large cast of characters who move the Just Say Cheese plot along at a rapid pace. But forget about wincing, you’ll be laughing too hard to worry. The action focuses on the much sought-after real estate occupied by the Hudson Grille and its next-door neighbor, Mercy Mission. While Luke and his partner Parker struggle to nurture their fledgling restaurant, Washington, D.C.’s development barons struggle equally hard to evict the proprietors and ground their dream kitchen. At the Grille Parker and Luke also manage to concoct successful love lives, care for the residents of the Mercy Mission and achieve... More > critical acclaim as stars of the Transvestite Triathlon. Along the way a DC shock jock targeting the Grille gets her come-uppance in more ways than one. Sue Barrymore, who is a very thinly apricot-veiled cross between a Geraldo Rivera and Dr. Ruth, attempts to use her power and sexuality to promote her TV show to even greater fame. Barrymore’s tumble from the public eye takes her literally to the basement with some very colorful (and colorfully named) black sex-phone operators. This is one call center that is in no danger of being outsourced to India. Hilarious though it is, the best feature of Just Say Cheese may not be the action, but the clever repartee that happens along the way. I predict that some of the more notable quips are instantly destined for the Urban Dictionary. The book has been called “biting satire” but the zaniness of the characters and their verbal exchanges will keep you too occupied to notice. This is decidedly “Kitchen Un-confidential.” At the end you’ll be wishing that Luke Hudson Fox continues his tell-all habits and hoping that there is a next in this series. -- Dino< Less
