I’m Still Standing… is complex, interdisciplinary in scope, and a must read for students of Latin American Studies, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies, Puerto Rican Studies, and Women Studies, just to name a few, as well as for those who have an insatiable thirst for eloquent poetry. With her elegant command of Spanish, English and French, Umpierre employs a poetic style imbued with a range of human experiences from disappointment, pain, anger, frustration, sadness, and suffering to love, passion, fortitude, courage, strength, and determination. Yes, I’m Still Standing… undoubtedly places Luz Maria Umpierre Herrera at the top of the list of the most distinguished poets of her generation and an inspiration for the next generation of poets. Once you start reading this poetic memoir, you will not be able to put it down. Umpierre’s poetry is original, absolutely exquisite!

This is a fantastic anthology that makes Luz María Umpierre's entire poetic work available for the first time in many years. It includes poems and essays in English and Spanish and will be of great interest to readers from many backgrounds, particularly those with interests in Puerto Rican and Latina/o experience in the U.S., Latin American literature, LGBT topics, feminism, and women's writing. The poetry is very moving and can be taught in college classrooms with great success. Volume includes useful introduction.
