Grandfather survived artillery fire, bombings, mustard gas, explosions, freezing rain, and sleepless nights all the while moving horse-drawn caissons full of ammunition, sometimes through knee-high mud, to the front lines. He lived to tell about it. His World War I experience is documented in this book. Personal letters, drawings and true stories in this work portray the life of a young soldier, Private Clarence Augustus Bush, during World War I. While serving in France he wrote home frequently to his bride Margaret. The 101st Field Artillery of 26th Division from New England, C Battery, abruptly left Camp Devens, Massachusetts, in early September 1917. Clarence drew portraits of fellow soldiers, French villages and the French countryside. His first-person account of the Second Battle of the Marne was published in the Christian Science Monitor as a series in 1918.

Wonderfully compelling. What is not highlighted is that Clarence Bush went on to become a sportswriter as well as a ghost writer for Johnny Weissmuller (from Tarzan movie fame). He later worked in PR for the 1936 Olympics- the one with Jesse Owens in Germany. He died in his early 40's soon after his stint working for the Olympics. He left behind his wife and four young children during the the Great Depression. With him being a natural born writer his love letters and personal accounts are well written. A true love story among the ravages of war.

Insightful, real word/live straight from the front-lines in WWI... Great book!...A must read, indeed!...I feel this is a great flash-back in History to read words penned straight from the front-lines to back home...I was very much touched by Clarence Bush's accounts of his life as a soldier in WWI (loved his drawings too)...It left me highly motivated by his kinship to the point I have started donating to "Operation Care and Comfort" which is an organization that collects for and sends care packages to soldiers I understand even more now, is a very worth-while program indeed! :O)
