Adventures in Indian Territory

ByLynn Trainor

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
In June 2016, my eight-year-old (almost nine) grandson, Gabriel, and I traveled for nine days to and around the great state of Oklahoma. Once known as “Indian Territory.” Oklahoma is a large and diverse state, so Gabriel and I had to focus our limited time in a smaller region – just the central and northeast portions of the state. We flew to Oklahoma City and rented a car to drive to our chosen locations. We lodged in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa, but we visited sites in Norman, Muskogee, Pryor, Miami, Stillwater, Tuttle, Park Gill, Catoosa, Ft. Gibson, and many other unique and small towns. We experienced the authentic Indian cultures of the Miami and Cherokee tribes, attended a small-town rodeo in Mayes County, attended a live cattle auction in Oklahoma City, and we visited zoos, water parks, botanical gardens, amusement parks, and a military cemetery. We had a great time together, and I feel Gabriel learned much from his time visiting the 46th state in our Union.
