In September and August of 2015, my ten-year-old grandson, Matthew, and I traveled for nine days to and around the Gulf Coast of four states in the “Deep South” region of the United States. These states were Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. We explored from Baton Rouge in the west to Pensacola in the east, and many interesting places in between. We saw many attractions of both large cities and small towns, and we enjoyed some truly off-the-beaten-path jewels. We wanted to discover what this Deep South land had to offer, and we were pleased with what we found. Matthew and I first traveled in an overnight sleeper car on the Amtrak Crescent train for 776 miles from Charlotte, North Carolina, to New Orleans, Louisiana. We then rented a car to make our 650-mile journey along the Gulf Coast. We lodged in Orange Beach, Florida, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and New Orleans, Louisiana, but we visited many small towns and attractions along the way and in the surrounding areas.
