This is the second set of adventures featuring Danny Dockett and, while it follows many of the characters introduced in The Enchantment, The Lightning Tree is the more interesting and more satisfying story. Both sets of tales are episodic, rather than plot driven, but told with little flashes of humour and enlivened with acute observation that often made me chuckle. Any time travel theme has to avoid the obvious danger of painfully anachronistic dialogue which this seems to do effortlessly, while its various excursions into the past are pleasingly interwoven with the daily life of the young protagonists whose interactions are delightfully described, their conception so inventive that one at least seemed almost surreal. A welcome development is the introduction of a character (even though he's unsympathetically portrayed) who looks for logical explanations of all the magic because the unquestioning acceptance of every aspect of the paranormal in The Enchantment called for repeated... More > suspensions of disbelief. Danny and the denizens of Upton Barrow definitely deserve a third outing and it is in anticipation of their next adventure that I'm limiting this to just four stars.< Less

This second book by M A Macklin continues to follow the adventures of Danny Dockett and his friends as they enter the mysterious and magical Lightning Tree and find themselves in medieval times. They get to meet a King, and find a new friend who can help them when they most need it, especially when they are in London in 1666. You will be fascinated by the people they meet, the adventures they encounter and some interesting history entwined within.
