This first novel by Mahra Casden invites the reader into an unnamed woman's life. Moving back and forth between past and present the reader is somewhat destablized. However, the positive consequence is that it allows you to take control of the meaning. As darkness comes into a young girl's life by way of revolution, taking shape as the worst of humanity, it is unmistakably a reflection on Nazi Germany, concentration camps, and dreadful characters who come alive in this very disturbing narrative. As a debut novel, it signals great promise for this new writer who isn't afraid to "go there" in shining a spotlight as cruelty gives birth to psychosis.
