"BLINKS IN MY MIND'S EYE: "Distinctive Poetry"" Reviewed by Richard Lee Orey at request of the author. In offering a critical review of Mairead Kelly’s collective poetry titled BLINKS IN MY MIND’S EYE, I begin with an excerpt of my impression of her lovely poem “Stolen Moments” when I first read her work posted at her site in “Oh, My! Mairead, what a beautiful poem. Your lyrical verses take us from the fire of infatuation to the depth of love tasted but unfilled with commitment, an emotion most of us have felt and remember well… This glimpse you have given us from your book…is but a tease of the treasure within… “Stolen Moments’” tells me this is a prize I owe to myself not to miss… This is wonderful.” Mairead Kelly’s collective work is presented in 52 poems in 92 pages. It embraces the strong and heartfelt emotions of a young single mother of three children as she struggles with the issues of being a mother and of finding loving acceptance and... More > harmonious relations with the numerous men in her life, issues which typify the struggle of a great number of single mothers in our liberated society. Ms. Kelly publicly acknowledges that she leads a nontraditional life and finds the pathway of the traditional committed relationship of husband and wife “difficult to follow.” Her struggle with traditionality is evidenced in the evocative pathos of many of her poems, such as “The Dirty Secret,” “The Mating Dance,” “Don’t Say It’s Over,” “Rude, Lewd, And So In The Mood,” “Joyride” and “Forbidden.” The imagery of Ms. Kelly’s poems is strong, and exceptionally vibrant moments are tendered in such poems as “Stolen Moments,” “Raw,” “Disturbing Thoughts” and “I Want,” although there is at times a stilted relationship with rhyme and meter and an occasional minor lapse of professional editing. Everywhere in this collective work are expressions of excitement, passion, pain, disappointment and depression, much of which one may deduce flows from a seriatim of loving and making love with conscious decision not to be committed, whether with men who were single and partnered with her or who were married to another while partnered with her on a whimsical basis. The sound and tone of BLINKS IN MY MIND’S EYE is sometimes joy and delight but mostly filled with the angst which comes with the threat of “please don’t take it away” or the thought “your wife would be a thorn in my side.” I find the poetry of Mairead Kelly of Ireland a stimulating and provocative glimpse into the life of a modern-day nontraditional woman. If you’re looking for an unpretentious anthology of distinctive poetry, BLINKS IN MY MIND’S EYE is perfect. Respectfully, Richard Lee Orey Novelist/Poet< Less

"Liked this" I liked this collection of poetry. Some of theme were very witty, some very emotionally raw and others just happy or sad.
