The first Christian church in North America was built by Thjodhild, wife of Eric the Red, shortly after the first European colonization of Greenland in 985. Other churches were established by the Viking settlers soon thereafter. This calendar shows an archaeologically correct reconstruction of Thjodhild’s church, and the newer church standing on the same site a thousand years later. It shows two other Viking churches, both in ruins. It also shows the living churches at Brattahlid, Appilatoq, Ittoqqortoormiit, and Ammassalik. All photographs captioned with location and brief historical note as appropriate. Cover photograph not repeated as a monthly image. Please see preview.
