This study employed an in-person survey of 59 college students in the Washington, DC area during the 2013 spring semester to examine if adolescents are vulnerable to the messages embedded in music and more specifically whether college students view music lyrics differently today than when they were in high school. The findings suggest that defiant music such as rock or hip hop may not be indicators of poor academic achievement as suggested in previous academic studies. Furthermore, reliance on the sound of music (beat, instrument, etc.) versus music lyrics appears to be the strongest influencer in music selection among adolescents.
