This autobiographical novel takes the reader to the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, where a lovesick slacker DJ is on the verge of quitting the Peace Corps as the nation is on the verge of massive civil unrest. Assigned to seek out a missing volunteer, he finds himself swept up in a tangled web of corrupt bureaucrats, drug smugglers, renegade military factions, traditional healers, and miracles. And the beat goes on.

Nov 29, 2014This is a novel about doing incredible things with incredible people, and watching them swirl down the drain. This is a novel about going to areas short on hope, rain, survival odds, and often sanity, and meeting with joy and dancing. This is a novel about people out for themselves, and out for others. It's awfully hard to summarize. It took me a bit to get started, and I had to read it in small doses: The subject matter is heavy, even if the author's tone is playful and light. You're handed a very serious meal with some colorful and creative side-dishes. The desserts and drinks at the end are certainly a great pay-off, but there's far more to enjoy about this meal than you would if you were just waiting for them. It's a beautiful work of art for anybody hoping to hold on hope that there are wonderful people out there trying to beat back the darkness, but it's a dangerous one for any idealists who hope to see the good things last forever. It's got a powerful, driving romantic plot in... More > it that doesn't feel at all like a subplot. It's powerful and moving and tragic and glorious in its own right, but works so well in the setting of the rest of the story. The best relationship integration into a plotline I've ever read, bar none. The timeline jumps around a bit without much notice, but you'll catch on quickly. It's there to tantalize with stories you haven't gotten to yet, but just wait, it says. Wait 'til you hear this one. And the pay-off was always worth it. It's not a smooth curve from start to climax; it's a wild, questionably-maintained thrill ride with ecstatic highs and devastating lows; it's got amazing characters and a playful, engaging narrative style. It's got a plot that picks up speed and momentum like a boulder rolling downhill; you can't really appreciate the force until it's too late to do anything but get carried away. Who should read this/Who should you buy this for: Anybody who can empathize with Peace Corps missions, anybody who is interested in developing nations, anybody who has ever had their life dominated, however briefly, by the power of music and/or dance, anybody who has ever felt the joy of discovering a place that serves pizza thousands of miles from home, anybody who has chased a passionate love across at least three time zones and national borders. Honestly, I'd recommend it for just about anybody. If you've never felt moved by any of the above, I'll bet you will by the time you finish this book.< Less
