Recounting Memory

ByMara Jevera Fulmer

Full title - Recounting Memory: Flint-Area Holocaust Survivors & Youth Dialogue with History. Published to accompany an exhibit of stories and photos of survival in an oral history project that brings together area students and Holocaust survivors. Students and faculty of Mott Community College in Flint, MI collaborated with high school students and staff of Flint’s Jewish Community Services to capture the stories of Flint-area Holocaust survivors who were immigrants from the former USSR. First-hand accounts of survival during World War II were retold by five community members who had lived through this period as young children. Students engaged in the interviews, hearing the stories of survival, hope, and overcoming racial and ethnic persecution, topics that still resonate loudly in today’s world. The educational focus of this project demonstrates the value of partnerships between colleges and local non-profits which can create rich opportunities for learning that can bring the lessens of history to life.
