This tool emerged from work with GIS-based tools and a workshop format to engage residents in data collection of their walking and biking routes. While past work was successful in data collection tool use and in facilitating community conversations, the technical infrastructure had significant distribution limitations. GIS-based tools require technicians, adding to development costs, creating a cost barrier for many communities.
The Fix This Tool is designed to overcome distribution and cost barriers. This report outlines the philosophy of a community-based data collection process, describes the tool, and compares the iPhone and GIS models.
