Shem was the son of James Purnell Jr. and Ann Beaven, but was raised by his aunt Elizabeth Alder. Both Ann and Elizabeth were daughters of Job Beaven and Jane Keats. Shem joined the LDS Church in Cheltenham, England and came to America with his cousin Alfred Alder.
