The problem with any print encyclopedia these days is that it rapidly goes out of date, and as films based on Shakespeare seem to come out all the time any book with this title cannot hope to keep up with sites like Imdb. What Imdb can never do, however, is be as erudite, as witty, as elegantly written or as downright informative as this wonderful book. Mr Pitcaithly starts with the earliest of films of Shakespeare all the way back in the nineteenth century, and the extent of his (almost obsessive) research ensures that no film with any connection to Shakespeare is missing. His analyses are academic but personal, and he has a pleasing way of 'telling it like it is' in a particularly dry, British way. As an example, his entry for 'Eros Perversion' reads "Wernheim's porn version of Twelfth Night is now unavailable ; I have been unable to uncover any details". The only fault I can find with this book is that there is no index by film title - only by artist - but this is in fact... More > a great book to dip into and get distracted by. And far more satisfying than the internet.< Less
