This paper examines artwork that is reflective of the female identity and experiences that inspire art. Social issues have been a constant in a source of inspiration throughout the history of art. A survey of the artwork of Karen Maness is used to exemplify this argument. Maness was born and resides in North Carolina, where she is a professor at High Point University. She uses a wide variety of mediums that convey her proficiency in communicating herself to the viewer. Many of her works include materials that are pertinent to the female identity, some of which include lipstick, and other cosmetics, and hair. An essential aspect of Maness’s work is using materials in unusual art forms and the incorporation of gender roles. She also has worked in printmaking, installation, drawing and painting.
