Have you ever wanted to say, "Beam me up, Scotty?" Some of us read to gain knowledge and some to be entertained. There are always those times too when we reach for a book that we know will teleport us up and away from our present challenges, stress or responsibilities. Sometimes we need a change of scenery when we have no time or money to organize one. Hurrah, the answer is here in The Garnet Bracelet! When I pick it up to select one of its charming stories I feel like I am about to say, "Beam me up, Scotty," or maybe I should say, "Beam me up, Kuprin and K." Alexander Kuprin is a Russian writer but you would never guess it if you are expecting stories about snow and intrigue. Instead, Kuprin opens an amazing world of travel to us including *** the view from behind the eyes of a very large and protective dog named Sapsan. *** I saw the dust rise from the floor of a bullfight ring, and heard the crowds take in their breath when a new, indignant, powerful... More > bull stamped out into the ring looking around for a challenge. *** I held the hand of a man who's life has been lost in the love of an impossible to obtain woman. He allowed me to gently wipe his silent tears after she left his room for the last time. *** I traveled by ocean liner and train to visit circus companies with their amazing acts that held the audience frozen, waiting for the outcome of each performance. Spangles glittered, horses stamped their feet impatiently, children cried out for their mothers and food vendors shouted about their fragrant and tasty wares. No, Kuprin didn't keep me sitting in a small room with endless conversations, he beamed me up from one location to another and set me down among an unexpected new party each time. I'm thankful that Maria K recognized his talent and the fact that he has so much diversity to offer his readers. With skill and patience she has translated the colorful Russian language into English so that we may be transported to many different worlds and remain there, captivated. I have to go, my spaceship has returned. This time we are headed to visit a king living in the Middle East. He has just received a shipment of gifts consisting of ivory, ornamented Egyptian carriages, live tigers and lions, peacocks, monkeys and too many things to list here. I want to be there when he begins opening his presents. Open your book to page 254 and beam up with me!< Less
