This is an epic family history about refugees from Stalin’s regime of terror. Full of historical detail on Russia and China, the story follows the flight of two families. One a prosperous clan of merchants, the other ambitious peasants; their lives entwine over many years. Their first destination is China, where the ‘White Russians’ preserve their culture in the volatile cosmopolitan city of Shanghai in the 1930’s and 40’s. Forced to flee Communism again after Mao’s victory, they enjoy a tropical interlude in the Philippines before finding safer havens in Australia and America. The story comes full circle with the demise of the USSR and the rediscovery of family links that had been torn asunder. Rival political ideologies are explored unflinchingly and the story ends with hope for the future of the émigrés’ descendents. Jul 4, 2009"Russian Roots" I am enthralled and captivated with your book. It is so well written and well put together, making it an informative and enjoyable read. The historical parts interwoven with your family are done in such a warm and memorable way.Louise Ivanoff, Sydney, Australia. I've read your book with a great interest, not only because it’s wonderful to know you and your relatives better, but also to find out some historic facts about the revolution, Stalin's time, 2nd World War, China, etc. which were hidden from me before. What I like is your openness and your clear point of view, which you're not afraid to share. Reading such extraordinary stories and ordeals your ancestors and relatives had to go through in their lives; I could feel a sort of attachment to them. Certainly, this book can be very inspiring and encouraging for your boys, to read about such strong characters who survived much historical and political turmoil, and to relate to these people. ...Would be... More > interesting to talk to you about your Russian cultural and religious experiences next time, as it was a surprise for me to find out that you were surrounded by it, possibly more than any Soviets were.Irene Chilton, Prague, Czech Republic. I have nearly finished reading your book. I find it hard to put down. I know I read it before but every book has to be read more than once. The best of all for me was the part where you relate to us your childhood and life in general in Cabramatta. It felt so real that I had a feeling of being present there myself. That fibro garage/cottage, the veggie garden your dad worked on, your early school years, stood before me like a moving picture. ...I admire your enormous work, producing this manuscript, and I liked the ending, how the whole family was mentioned and somehow united through your effort.Olga Pronin, Sydney, Australia.< Less
