The Ovens of Lonquén: Historiography, Memory and Human Rights

ByMario Aguilar Benitez

During the last weekend of March of 2010 the remains of thirteen people were buried in Isla de Maipo. The human remains were those of the majority of men, fifteen in total, who had been arrested and killed by the Carabineros on 7 October 1973, almost a month after the Chilean military coup. The bodies had been exhumed from the Isla de Maipo Parish Cemetery in 2006, sent to the Servicio Médico Legal (SML) in Santiago, and later delivered to a forensic laboratory in Texas for identification. This is their story.
