This is the HARDCOVER Version.
This is the first English translation of Genwa Nakasone's 1938 Karate-do Taikan. It is one of the most comprehensive books published during the golden age of Karate-do. The book contains chapters of a veritable who's who of Karate-do luminaries including: Shiroma Shimpan, Hanashiro Chomo, Mabuni Kenwa, Otsuka Hironori, and Taira Shinken. The book is richly illustrated and goes into detail about Karate-do history, philosophy, techniques and kata.

On certain discussion forums, I noticed that people had a number of complaints about this book. As it states on the author spotlight, these books are entirely self produced, and to achieve such a task is no easy feat. In addition to this I would challenge anyone to first find an affordable copy of this work in Japanese, and then try translating it so that you can actually understand the contents. On both accounts I think the complainers would fail. Do not be put off by the price of this work, it is worth every penny to anybody with the slightest interest in the history of karate. Full of excellent photographs of some of the most celebrated masters of the art, and containing some seriously thought provoking essays, this book is a must have for all serious students. If you want to witness the change in emphasis which karate was going through due to the Japanese war effort, this will reveal all. Once again I congratulate and thank Mr McKenna for his contribution to karatedo through this... More > translation.< Less
