This is the PAPERBACK version of "An Overview of Karatedo".
This is the first English translation of Genwa Nakasone's 1938 Karate-do Taikan. It is one of the most comprehensive books published during the golden age of Karate-do. The book contains chapters of a veritable who's who of Karate-do luminaries including: Shiroma Shimpan, Hanashiro Chomo, Mabuni Kenwa, Otsuka Hironori, and Taira Shinken. The book is richly illustrated and goes into detail about Karate-do history, philosophy, techniques and kata.

Karate-do Taiken by Genwa Nakasone (1938): An Overview of Karate-do translated by Mario McKenna. This book provides exactly what its title suggests, an overview of Karate-do in the late 1930's. Detailing training methods and showing the performance of several Shorin Ryu kata, plus some Bunkai. A dagger demonstration by Wado Ryu's Hironori Otsuka nicely illustrates a divergence between Okinawa Karate and the Japanese approach. It also captures a failed attempt to unify and standardize Karate at this time. The photos alone are fascinating. I thank Mr McKenna for his efforts in translating this important work.
