This review was sent to me by a U3A Literary Critic UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE BOOK REVIEW VENGEANCE IN THE SKY Mark Charlton-Kings Part of the Dalton family trilogy, Vengeance in the Sky is the novel which links Revenge is Wild Justice and Smoke Without Fire, the two previous, extremely successful books by Mark Charlton-Kings. It can, however, be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone work. The story takes us from the period just before WWII to just after it ends and is set in England, France, Germany and Rhodesia during this turbulent time. It concentrates on the lives of Philip and Jenny Dalton, siblings brought up in a wealthy, land-owning family in rural England who both play a part in the defence of their country, though in very different ways. The Blitz, the Battle of Britain, the clever machinations of the Secret Intelligence Service, new developments in air warfare, plus a series of grisly murders all hold the reader’s attention right to the end. The early part of the novel... More > introduces a large number of characters, all of whom are intrinsic to the plot, although this does not become apparent until later on. Eventually the disparate threads of the tale are drawn together and woven into a page-turner of a story which moves along at considerable pace and provides enough drama, horror, romance and adventure to satisfy the most demanding reader of family sagas. As ever the book has been meticulously researched by the author and the introduction of several real people into the narrative adds to the verisimilitude of the events taking place. Mr Charlton-Kings provides the reader with a considerable amount of information in his stories as well as great entertainment. This is enhanced by the inclusion of a detailed addendum to the book. All in all a jolly good read! Carole M Literary Critic U3A September 2016< Less
