Presbyterianism Re-asserted

ByMark Hausam

Presbyterianism and denominationalism are naturally mortal enemies. Presbyterianism calls for one visible church of Christ, while denominationalism is satisfied with multiple visible churches of Christ. Presbyterianism calls for a collegial presbyerate governing the universal church, while denominationalism requires no formal mutual submission between denominations. In this book, Mark Hausam takes a close look at the system of Presbyterian church government (both in terms of its biblical foundations and its historic articulations) and examines its implications for how divided denominations should relate to each other. The conclusion is that denominational division is a far more serious matter than many in modern Reformed churches would like to think, and that the toleration of denominationalism common in many Reformed circles raises the question of how consistent our Presbyterian practice in this area really is.
