A remarkable read, especially for history buffs and anyone with passion for military naval armament and strategy. It is a fascinating tale of ‘what if’ and how a robust Dutch navy changes history in the years leading up to WWII by her involvement in the protection of the colonial interests of the Dutch in the islands of the East Indies. Here history is not just rewritten; it is remanufactured. In those sensitive years between the two world wars the Netherlands found herself unprepared to protect her colonial acquisitions in the East Indies. So dismal were the circumstances that the Dutch did indeed lose nearly everything, including the lives of many of her citizens living on the islands. But to the rescue (well, not entirely, but the outcome is greatly ameliorated) is a rapidly engineered Naval Fleet, a unique extension of the Royal Netherlands Navy. It is the creation, building, and execution of this fleet that underlies the narrative weaving throughout the story as the author... More > portrays how the protagonist (Admiral of the Dutch Navy) faces and overcomes numerous architectural and strategic challenges. Here the author’s clearly intimate and well-studied knowledge of shipbuilding and passion for history makes the story more than believable. For example: The creation and development of a new type of capital ship, a battleship/carrier which combines three turrets armed with 13.5 in. rifles with a substantial flight deck operation composed of a powerful array of fighter, torpedo planes, and bombers. In the story the Dutch have presumably successfully dealt with the blast problem associated with these high caliber naval rifles and the combined weapons system represents an innovative way of solving the problem attending in the requirement of having ships with naval artillery and ships carrying naval aircraft. Indeed, accompanying photographs and documentation leave one wondering where reality slides and fiction slips in… or does it?< Less
