Following on from the The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is for many people Twain's masterpiece. The story follows Huck Finn as he decides to escape the confining civilization of St. Petersburg, Missouri. During his escape he is joined by the escaped slave, Jim, and they travel down the Mississippi together.
The book is a colourful and amusing satire on the racism prevalent in the society of the American South before the American Civil War. It is also an exciting adventure story, with an number of dramatic twists.
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has received attention for its controversial use of racist language and has been censored in some U.S. schools.
