Published in 1869 by the American Publishing Company, The Innocents Abroad was the first of Twain's Travelogues and recounts an organised excursion to the Mediterranean, taking in many coastal ports and climaxing with a tour of the Holy Land. Twain's biggest selling book during his lifetime, this was perhaps his most critical and in some sections spiteful, attacking the attitudes of both tourists and locals alike and making pointed contrasts between the realities and how they are portrayed in existing travel books.
