Published in 1883 simultaneously in the United States and the United Kingdom by James R. Osgood and by Chatto and Windus respectively, Life on the Mississippi was Twain's fifth travelogue book, a count that includes the prior publication Old Times on the Mississippi, which was included as a distinct segment in this work.
The book is in two essential parts, a recollection of Twain's time on the river as a steamboat pilot before the Civil War and a familiar travelogue of a trip from St Louis to New Orleans many years later. The second segment includes a number of 'stories' some or all of which may be fictionalised.
