Published in 1876 by the American Publishing Company, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was Twain's second novel following A Gilded Age. Using autobiographical sources for the principle characters, and based in a loose version of his hometown Hannibal, Missouri, here named St Petersberg, the novel relates a series of linked adventures in which Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn evade and get the better of various adults, both good and bad.
Released fairly early in his writing career, Tom Sawyer nevertheless stands alongside Huckleberry Finn as a strong highlight of Twain's work. Written mostly for children, but still appealing to adult readers, the story includes strong narrative elements that leave distinctive scenes on the memory of those who've read it.
