Apr 2, 2013Mark has penned a story which fuses the physical adventure of one man, the moral dilemmas he faces, the spiritual encounters that save him and all in the cultural context that is quintessentially English. There is a plethora of characters and their drama that speaks into the experiences of most readers, whether they be on the receiving end of a prodigal, or whether they are the prodigal who is lost and is yet to be found. The echoes of the biblical narrative from Dr Luke seep through the writing which I like to define as a form of 'spiritual literacy.' I am getting copies for my students so that they can drink from the spiritual, moral and cultural richness this book has to offer.
Jan 30, 2013If you think gambling is just entertainment, if you think it fills a hole in your bank account, think again. Observe Jack and his spinning world, a world of lies, loss and secret struggles. A tight and emotional book that passionately confronts the journey of one courageous man whose life is about to change. First of all, this book will resonate with many people who have encountered addictions of this kind. It was a rush reading the first chapter! Especially the bit about chartering a boat off the Cornish coast, filling it with buckets of foul-smelling chum and fishing for a 300lb Mako. Sounds eerily familiar….. Jake and Pete are talking. Nothing wrong with that - only it’s the Mercedes, the mega-bucks, the jewelry, the excitement . . . This is some serious shine! And we all work for dull bosses selling dull products (I hope my boss doesn’t read any of this) so anything’s got to be better. Right? Wrong. Pete’s a champ and Jake gets hooked. Can Pete teach Jake to be a champ like him?... More > Absolutely, a few good lessons and a man’s a Mako. But this man goes home late and misses tucking up Tommy . . . serious red flag. But with a new spring in his step and a few daydreams later, the lusty Jake begins to learn the art of stealth, lying and cheating to feed a craving. Not only has Stibbe done a ‘royal flush’ of research for this novel but manages to alert his readers to the art of reading an opponent, the most vital component to winning. Jake’s ready for the game and Christmas is coming. But can Jake dig himself out of a yawning hole? And will Sally find that receipt? Tommy’s letter is heartbreaking. We care for Jake, we’re rooting for him. But he’s sinking fast. A constellation of stars to another of Mark Stibbe's unputdownable books. C.M.T. Jan 26, 2013If you're looking for a story that will capture your every emotion, tug on your heart strings and draw you into a world of fear and fascination - look no further. As the story progresses, so does the pace. We meet characters who we love and make us laugh(Christine/Father Jim) and characters we love to hate and make us squirm (the Undertaker). It's always a good sign when I find myself shedding a tear at a book - Mark Stibbe has created characters who we care deeply about and brings us into a world many of us are terrified of. Jake's journey along the streets of 'Casino City' is harrowing, beautiful and often profound. I found the narrative veering towards thriller territory - but in a way which relates to a 'normal' reader and encourages us to look at our own stories and ask 'what if?' When I was reading this book, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. When I wasn't reading this book, I couldn't get back to it fast enough! You will not regret buying The Prodigal Father - let it...
