By John Livingston Clark I looked forward to reading this book because I, too, am the child of a preacher, and the author is a personal friend of mine. This book is easy to read and is published in large print. It is the story of a pastor's family and their travels to different towns in the mid-western part of America, as the father accepted the call of God to plant and pastor several churches. There are several themes throughout the book, as stories within the story. In addition to relating the experiences of church planting, traveling from town to town, and life as a preacher's kid, the author recalls hardships of growing up and doing what needs to be done with the little that one has. Another "story" that springs up from time to time throughout the book talks about how the author had a dream planted in her mind to someday become a writer, even in grade school. "A seed for a dream was planted. The words of encouragement from Miss H and recognition as a winner for my... More > writing watered that dream a bit. Maybe someday I would be an author." (page 120) She loved books, and her dream was further confirmed as she got older. Growing up in church made her want to serve God and help other people. Actually, there was one time that her family lived in the church building because of no place else to stay. Her father not only pastored churches but also planted new ones, and did so quite successfully. The book lists some things he did that still could easily apply today to start new congregations. The book is filled with moments of laughter. There is the time when the father, the new pastor in town, chased a chicken down the street. It broke the ice within the community in terms of the pastor's family being accepted as one of them. Then there is another instance when he ended up with 112 tomato plants. The laughter is balanced with lots of practical life wisdom scattered throughout this book of 332 pages. There is plenty of humor, wisdom, and inspiration for anyone, whether or not one is a preacher's kid.< Less
