Legacy of Rescue: A Daughter's Tribute
An illustrated intergenerational memoir of the author’s father, Morton (Miksa) Fuchs, and Zoltán Kubinyi, the Commanding Officer who saved him and over 100 other Hungarian Jewish men in forced labor under his command during the Holocaust. Captured as a POW by the liberating Russian Army, Zoltan Kubinyi, a devout Seventh Day Adventist, died a year later in a Siberian labor camp, and buried in an unmarked grave. Due to Morton Fuchs’ testimony, he was posthumously honored as a Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. The story of rescue came full circle in 2011 when the author and her brother took their children back to Hungary to meet the rescuer's family. With the rescuer’s son, an infant when his father went off to war, his wife and granddaughters -- the great grandchildren of Zoltan Kubinyi -- the author’s family discussed the heroic actions of this compassionate and courageous man none of them knew but who has made such an indelible... Nov 27, 2012Dedicated, grateful, and passionate Marta Fuchs has written an exceptionally moving story of her father's rescuer Zoltsn, Kubinyi, Hungarian commander of a forced labor battalion, who saved over 100 Jewish men under his charge from Nazi annihilation during the Holocasut era. Marta and her father prepared the documentation for Kubinyi' designation as a Righteous Gentile by Yad Vashem. In 1994 Kubinyi was posthumously recognized in a a television program in Hungary. In May of 1994, Marta addressed a Holocaust commemoration ceremony in the Fuchs hometown of Tokay which was attended by her brother Henry, other relatives, and the Kubinyi's son Marton Kubinyi. In her memorable recounting, she poignantly remembered the moral courage and brave rescue action of Zoltan Kubinyi and his impact on the Fuchs family in Hungary and in the USA. In 2011 Marta and her children Jacob and Sophie and Henry's children Sam and Miriam traveled to Hungary to visit the Kubinyi family -- Marton and his wife and... More > their two grandchildren, the great grandchildren of Zoltan Kubinyi. Marta's recollections of this occasion and the memories of the grandchildren of Morton ( Miksa) Fuchs are penetrating, riveting, and heartfelt. First person accounts reveal a profound connection between the past and present and the legacy of Kubinyi to the future of the Fuchs family. This book is recommended for high school progrsms, college students, adult reading clubs and intergenerational reading by families and interdenominational groups. The meritorious book by Marta Fuchs has wide appeal for readers of all ages.< Less
Nov 26, 2012History makes the biggest impression on me when I experience it through the perspective of particular individuals. Legacy of Rescue is a book that does just that. Although I read it months ago, I retain a strong and emotional memory of the account. This story of a Hungarian family surviving Nazi occupation is vividly told by the author, Marta Fuchs, the daughter of survivor parents. She narrates her family story and uses accounts from several members, including her own telling of their flight from Communist ruled Hungary when she was 5 years old. Though there are many Holocaust survivor histories, this book is centered not only on the author’s family, but on one righteous Hungarian soldier who disobeyed orders and, by his actions, saved 100 Jewish men under his command…but not his own life. Marta Fuchs leads us through her family’s process of finding this man’s family, acknowledging his bravery with recognition at Yad Vashem, honoring him in their home town of Tokaj, and gathering... Nov 24, 2012Here are some themes that come up in my book presentations, serving as catalysts for engaging discussions: 1. All of us can make a difference in everyday life by caring, speaking up, showing respect, kindness, and compassion for others. 2. The past is always present; we are all shaped by what happened to us growing up as well as what shaped our parents’ lives and therefore our own. Knowing your family roots can enable you to have a sense of connection, continuity, identity. 3. We must consciously teach through modeling respect for differences, cultivate empathy and altruism in our children at home and in our schools. 4. It’s important to honor those who have risked their lives to save others, and to show and inspire others to find their own courage to do the right thing.
Nov 24, 2012"After Marta Fuchs had given a reading, and spoken to a room full of my friends, about her book, many asked me to arrange for another meeting. Legacy of Rescue is a powerful book, written so that the courage of one man, who gave his life so that the innocent would survive in very dark times, not be forgotten. Marta is a dynamic speaker who has made her father's story and that of his rescuer, her own story and that of her children. It is a story that should be heard by both young and old, Jew and Christian alike." ~ I
