I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Colby has some serious challenges in his life, and there are so many matters he has no control over, but he's doing what he can to resolve the problems and not contribute to them. He's clearly discouraged, and that is reflected in the desperation that begins to appear in some of his decision-making. His rationale makes sense, but as an adult, I was mentally screaming, "No, don't do that!" several times throughout the book. There are several story arcs bringing both happiness and challenge to Colby's life, which keeps the story balanced. There's a mostly happy ending, but the story is realistic enough not to have everything completely wrapped up and resolved. Although it sure comes together in a rush at the end! Life can come at your fast, though. Even the good stuff. I think it shows some of the temptations people experience as they try to resolve seemingly insurmountable problems. I'm an adult, but I think the book is well-suited to the... More > target audience -- upper middle school to younger high school (Colby is a high school freshman).< Less
