While in college I interned at a law firm on Judge's Hill in Austin, Texas. During this time, I walked by the beautiful old house of Lucy Taxis Shoe Merritt and, while unaware of that fact at the time, I noticed heaps of paper items loaded onto a trailer (trash), which caught my eye. I dug through the items and salavaged a number of old books and papers that, even as trash, were more interesting that all of the possessions in any of the homes of my family. I still have and treasure the items I salavaged from the trash that day. Who knew that I would one day become a historian of architecture and work in Philadelphia. I am so glad that Ms. Grundy has published this book, as I knew there was nothing normative about even the trash I salvaged that day.
