The following account was inspired by a brief mention in the Orange Banner of the death in action of 2nd Lt Ernest Martin in France during the 1st World War. The account traces the life, service and ultimate sacrifice of this brave individual who like so many gave all in
answering their country’s call.
The ensuing pages trace some of his early years, his enlistment in the Artists Rifles and subsequent granting of a commission in the 1st Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment. It traces his time in the front line at Ypres and on the Somme including an account of his last action.
